Wätjen and Kabar in starting line-up as DFB U19s throw away 5-1 lead against England

A Germany U19 national team with the Dortmund duo of Kjell Wätjen and Almugera Kabar in the starting line-up had to settle for a 5-5 draw with England in their second group game at the European Championship finals in Romania.

Having lost their opening game 3-0 to the Netherlands, the DFB team were already leading 5-1 by the 48th minute. After that, they completely threw the game away. "We managed to control a strong England team for the entire first half. That makes it all the more incomprehensible how we then conceded four goals in the space of 10 minutes – in a game that we had dominated until up that point. Something like this cannot be allowed to happen to us in this form," said DFB coach Hanno Balitsch.

His team now need a victory in their final group match against Norway (Friday at 19:00 CEST) in order to progress to the knockout stages. At the same time, the U19 national team must hope that the Dutch, who have already qualified for the quarter-finals, do not lose against England. The Netherlands lead the group going into the final matchday, with six points, ahead of England (two), Norway and Germany (one apiece).

Almugera Kabar once again played the full 90 minutes on the left side of defence, while Kjell Wätjen, who was involved in the build-up to the goals for 3-1 and 5-1, was substituted in the 85th minute for tactical reasons. (wiwi)
