BVB receives ISO 50001 energy management certification

For the first time, Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA and its subsidiaries will receive the internationally recognised ISO 50001 standard certification for energy management systems.

In doing so, the Bundesliga team will be taking another important step towards professional management and ongoing improvement of its energy consumption. Furthermore, by implementing the system on time, BVB also complies with the requirements of the Energy Efficiency Act from July 2025.

This measure is another important building block in grounding everyday actions in a greater and constant awareness of individual responsibility. In line with this principle, Borussia Dortmund also had its environment management system certified according to the ISO 14001 standard last year. In this way, BVB can reduce its environmental risks, make processes more efficient, and demonstrate compliance with the law.

Both certifications count simultaneously towards Borussia Dortmund’s comprehensive strategy for holistic decarbonisation. With concrete measures and clearly defined goals, such as reaching carbon neutrality in scope 1 and 2 by 2024, BVB is consistently working to make its corporate footprint increasingly more positive.

Background

ISO 50001 is the standard which is recognised and applied worldwide for energy management systems. The standard was published in 2011 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and was last revised in 2018. It helps companies to improve their energy efficiency, identify potential areas where savings could be made, and reduce their impact on the environment.

The international standard sets requirements for energy management systems which help organisations to continuously improve their energy-related performance (e.g. their energy efficiency) by developing the necessary systems and processes.
