First session in Spain – BVB start the year in front of fans

The first training session of the new year is complete: after arriving at the training camp in Marbella on Friday afternoon, coach Niko Kovac led the BVB players onto the pitch for the first time. In front of around 100 BVB fans who had come to the Banus Football Centre, Borussia kicked off the year with a session – temperatures were hovering around 15 degrees, more than 10 degrees warmer than in snowy Dortmund, from where the team had taken off in the morning.

“We’ve had a two-week break, so we need to ease ourselves back into it,” said Kovac in a media round. After a pep talk at the start of the session and a warm-up programme, the ball came into play: various passing and heading exercises were on the agenda. The session ended with a game. Getting used to the ball was the focus of the first session.

The goalkeepers completed their programme on a side pitch. The injured Waldemar Anton and Aaron Anselmino also completed individual training sessions. While the coach is hopeful that Anton will be able to return to team training on Saturday, Anselmino will have to wait a little longer. “He still needs a few days. I hope he’ll be ready by the weekend. But we won’t rush anything or take any risks, because we’ve seen how important he can be,” said the coach.

After training, the fans got their reward when the players gladly signed autographs and posed for selfies. (cr)
