Clash at the Top: “We Have to Play at the Very Highest Level”
The scenario
After seven matchdays, both teams have five wins and two draws to their credit. A better goal differential puts the record champions (+19) in first place ahead of the Black and Yellows (+8).
“This certainly makes things a lot more exciting than in recent years,” said BVB coach Niko Kovac. “But that doesn’t make it any easier, because FC Bayern Munich is undoubtedly the best of the best—not just in Germany, but also in Europe.”
After two draws against Bremen and Union, BVB got back on track with a 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt last weekend. During the week, the team faced Werder again in the DFB Cup and advanced to the round of 16 with a 3-2 victory.
Kovac knows that only a top-notch performance will get them a result in Munich: “We have to play at the very highest level. But we’re BVB—we have our own standards, and we intend to live up to them.”

Opponent
Bayern Munich comfortably handled its cup match on Wednesday evening: In its home game against 1. FC Magdeburg, the team secured an easy 6-1 victory. In the Bundesliga, it has recently recorded two wins against Freiburg (3-1) and Leipzig (6-1). The team is currently being led by assistant coach Aaron Danks, as head coach Vincent Kompany is unable to be on the sidelines due to illness.
Special attention is being paid to striker Harry Kane, who was named the world’s best soccer player earlier this week with the Ballon d’Or. “There’s no need to say a word about him. The mere fact that he received this title says everything about him,” said Kovac. “He was already a top player in England. To take another leap forward now is sensational.”
Special Praise from the Coach
During the press conference ahead of the match against Bayern Munich, the phrase “I’m glad we have him” came up twice. Once it referred to center back Joane Gadou, and once to midfielder Joey Veerman. Both received special praise from the coach.
“I think he was the fastest player to be caught on camera in the Bundesliga,” said Kovac about Gadou, who has already defused several dangerous situations with his sprints in recent games. “In the cup match against Bremen, he not only had the speed but also covered a lot of ground for a center back. I hope he’s recovered enough to really step on the gas on Saturday.”
Veerman has been in the starting lineup for three straight games and has been pulling the strings in midfield. Kovac credits the newcomer with ball control and presence. “In a game like this, it can be crucial to use ball control to neutralize the pressure from FC Bayern Munich. He’s certainly a very, very important part of that. He’s gaining momentum more and more with each game.”
