Sebastien Haller out of action

Borussia Dortmund will be without Sebastien Haller for several weeks.

The Ivorian international twisted his ankle in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations and was substituted shortly before full-time. Examinations on Friday morning in Dortmund revealed that the ankle injury that Haller suffered against Mainz in mid-December has flared up again and the forward will have to take another break for a while. Get well soon, Seb!

What motivates you, then? \n<\/b>The vision of achieving something great. Not getting certain things handed to you on a plate, but really saying: We\u2019re working our way up step by step \u2013 from the regional league to the second division and into the Bundesliga. There\u2019s something big behind that. That\u2019s what I find so exciting. And it shows what\u2019s already happened at the club. Of course, the clubs in England are on a different level. But what I\u2019ve seen at BVB so far, what\u2019s already available in the Regionalliga, some clubs don\u2019t even have in the top flight. Then there are the fans \u2013 it\u2019s incredible how they\u2019re already filling the stadiums. I\u2019m looking forward to being out on the pitch soon, creating that atmosphere and feeling that DNA. \u201cHeja BVB\u201d is already a thing.<\/p>\nWhat sort of goalkeeper can BVB fans look forward to? How would you describe yourself? \n<\/b>Definitely passionate. I try to be vocal, but at the same time carefully assess what the team needs. But I love the fans. I love it when the fans make a noise. It\u2019s not for nothing that they call us the 12th woman on the pitch, and we want to achieve something together with the fans. And when the fans are loud, when we\u2019re loud on the pitch, we can create something great. And then you\u2019ll see me in all my glory on the pitch \u2013 or even off it. And for me, there\u2019s already a great foundation in place to build on. 3,500 fans at Regionalliga matches \u2013 that\u2019s incredible. You often don\u2019t get that many in the top flight. I hope that we girls on the pitch can continue to ensure that more and more people come to BVB.<\/p>\nYou once said: \u201cFor me, there are no small goals. I only set myself big ones.\u201d What goals have you set yourself here at Borussia Dortmund? \n<\/b>Quite a few. Over the next few years, we want to make our way up to the Bundesliga, so that in future we can build something for the girls coming through in our own club. And you have to set yourself big goals so that you also have smaller milestones along the way. And I can feel the energy in the club from the people I\u2019ve spoken to. What made you decide to wear the BVB shirt from this summer onwards? \n<\/b>It was always a goal of mine to return to my home town and finish my career here. And, of course, my personal life comes into it too as I\u2019d like to spend more time with my twins, and Dortmund can offer me that.<\/p>\n15 years at SGS Essen, countless club records, legendary status \u2013 how difficult was the decision to leave Essen, despite your conviction that you wanted to move to BVB? \n<\/b>After 15 years, it\u2019s never easy to leave a club where you\u2019ve experienced highs and lows, where you\u2019ve set records and are regarded as a club legend. Nevertheless, I\u2019m looking forward to my new challenge.<\/p>\nHow have you perceived the development of women\u2019s football at Borussia Dortmund in recent years? \n<\/b>I thought it was great that BVB started out in the district league. I think it\u2019s important and right not to buy their way into the regional league or something like that, but to start from the bottom just like any other club. That\u2019s what makes Borussia Dortmund special. They were promoted every year for the first four years. Unfortunately not this year, but that\u2019s just how it is in sport: sometimes there\u2019s a stumbling block in the way. Then you just have to take a little detour. Nevertheless, the progress has been outstanding and I\u2019m very happy to be able to continue on this path with Borussia Dortmund \u2013 even in the Regionalliga.<\/p>\nFour years ago you said: \u201cThat\u2019s just Borussia Dortmund. It\u2019s a club close to my heart too. Maybe I\u2019ll retire there one day. But I definitely won\u2019t be playing in the Bundesliga there.\u201d We need to ask you about that. First of all, explain your relationship with Borussia Dortmund. \n<\/b>I was born in Dortmund. My first club was SG Phoenix Eving. That\u2019s Dortmund through and through, so to speak. My mum and dad grew up here. Dortmund is our home town. I used to go to the stadium even as a small child. And even though none of us live in Dortmund anymore, it\u2019s still our club. My dad has season tickets; he goes to every men\u2019s match and will be going to the women\u2019s matches in future too (laughs).<\/p>\n<img src=\"/content/dam/bvbweb/en/news/2026/06/10/interview-meissner/Meissner-Interview-2.jpg\" data-assetref=\"Meissner-Interview-2-1781013390557\"><\/p>\nIn light of that, what does it mean to you personally to be wearing the BVB shirt with your name on it from this summer? \n<\/b>It\u2019s impossible to put into words. I feel so proud. It\u2019s something I\u2019ve been really looking forward to. It\u2019s simply the best thing ever for me and my family that I\u2019ll be able to wear the BVB shirt from this summer.<\/p>\nBack to the quote: you\u2019re not thinking about retirement yet, are you? \n<\/b>I\u2019m at an age where retirement is on the cards (laughs). I started my career in Dortmund, and I\u2019d like to finish my career here in Dortmund. How long I stay here also depends on what my body says and what the club wants. But one thing\u2019s clear: I want to finish my career at BVB.<\/p>\nBut you definitely won\u2019t be playing in the Bundesliga here? \n<\/b>(Laughs). Well, I certainly wouldn\u2019t make that statement today. Of course I want to play in the Bundesliga with Dortmund. That\u2019s the goal.<\/p>\nIs that the only goal or are there several? \n<\/b>Of course my goal is to do my utmost to help BVB get promoted to the top flight and perhaps get to play a few more games in the Bundesliga. At my age, though, the most important thing is to stay injury-free.<\/p>\nDescribe yourself as a player. What strengths do you bring to the team? \n<\/b>I\u2019m actually a relatively calm player. I give clear, short instructions rather than making long speeches. My speed and defensive work certainly set me apart.<\/p>\nSpeaking of giving instructions, will you be doing that at BVB as well? \n<\/b>I\u2019ll certainly be taking on that responsibility. That\u2019s to be expected. I come from the Bundesliga; I\u2019m expected to lead the way, to inspire the team with my experience but also to calm them down with my approach in difficult situations. That\u2019s definitely one of my strengths.<\/p>\nMarkus Högner, who coached you for many years and who you\u2019re now reunited with, is certainly aware of that strength too.<\/b> \nI\u2019m really looking forward to that. Markus has known me since I was 17. He was the one who guided me into the national team back then. I\u2019m curious to see whether he\u2019s changed over the year we\u2019ve spent apart, or whether he\u2019s matured a bit more as a coach. What made you decide to wear the BVB shirt from this summer onwards? \n<\/b>It was always a goal of mine to return to my home town and finish my career here. And, of course, my personal life comes into it too as I\u2019d like to spend more time with my twins, and Dortmund can offer me that.<\/p>\n15 years at SGS Essen, countless club records, legendary status \u2013 how difficult was the decision to leave Essen, despite your conviction that you wanted to move to BVB? \n<\/b>After 15 years, it\u2019s never easy to leave a club where you\u2019ve experienced highs and lows, where you\u2019ve set records and are regarded as a club legend. Nevertheless, I\u2019m looking forward to my new challenge.<\/p>\nHow have you perceived the development of women\u2019s football at Borussia Dortmund in recent years? \n<\/b>I thought it was great that BVB started out in the district league. I think it\u2019s important and right not to buy their way into the regional league or something like that, but to start from the bottom just like any other club. That\u2019s what makes Borussia Dortmund special. They were promoted every year for the first four years. Unfortunately not this year, but that\u2019s just how it is in sport: sometimes there\u2019s a stumbling block in the way. Then you just have to take a little detour. Nevertheless, the progress has been outstanding and I\u2019m very happy to be able to continue on this path with Borussia Dortmund \u2013 even in the Regionalliga.<\/p>\nFour years ago you said: \u201cThat\u2019s just Borussia Dortmund. It\u2019s a club close to my heart too. Maybe I\u2019ll retire there one day. But I definitely won\u2019t be playing in the Bundesliga there.\u201d We need to ask you about that. First of all, explain your relationship with Borussia Dortmund. \n<\/b>I was born in Dortmund. My first club was SG Phoenix Eving. That\u2019s Dortmund through and through, so to speak. My mum and dad grew up here. Dortmund is our home town. I used to go to the stadium even as a small child. And even though none of us live in Dortmund anymore, it\u2019s still our club. My dad has season tickets; he goes to every men\u2019s match and will be going to the women\u2019s matches in future too (laughs).<\/p>\n<img src=\"/content/dam/bvbweb/en/news/2026/06/10/interview-meissner/Meissner-Interview-2.jpg\" data-assetref=\"Meissner-Interview-2-1781013390557\"><\/p>\nIn light of that, what does it mean to you personally to be wearing the BVB shirt with your name on it from this summer? \n<\/b>It\u2019s impossible to put into words. I feel so proud. It\u2019s something I\u2019ve been really looking forward to. It\u2019s simply the best thing ever for me and my family that I\u2019ll be able to wear the BVB shirt from this summer.<\/p>\nBack to the quote: you\u2019re not thinking about retirement yet, are you? \n<\/b>I\u2019m at an age where retirement is on the cards (laughs). I started my career in Dortmund, and I\u2019d like to finish my career here in Dortmund. How long I stay here also depends on what my body says and what the club wants. But one thing\u2019s clear: I want to finish my career at BVB.<\/p>\nBut you definitely won\u2019t be playing in the Bundesliga here? \n<\/b>(Laughs). Well, I certainly wouldn\u2019t make that statement today. Of course I want to play in the Bundesliga with Dortmund. That\u2019s the goal.<\/p>\nIs that the only goal or are there several? \n<\/b>Of course my goal is to do my utmost to help BVB get promoted to the top flight and perhaps get to play a few more games in the Bundesliga. At my age, though, the most important thing is to stay injury-free.<\/p>\nDescribe yourself as a player. What strengths do you bring to the team? \n<\/b>I\u2019m actually a relatively calm player. I give clear, short instructions rather than making long speeches. My speed and defensive work certainly set me apart.<\/p>\nSpeaking of giving instructions, will you be doing that at BVB as well? \n<\/b>I\u2019ll certainly be taking on that responsibility. That\u2019s to be expected. I come from the Bundesliga; I\u2019m expected to lead the way, to inspire the team with my experience but also to calm them down with my approach in difficult situations. That\u2019s definitely one of my strengths.<\/p>\nMarkus Högner, who coached you for many years and who you\u2019re now reunited with, is certainly aware of that strength too.<\/b> \nI\u2019m really looking forward to that. Now the time has come.<\/p>\nEven so, is there a touch of sadness about leaving Essen? \n<\/b>Yes, of course. I grew up and developed as a footballer in Essen. I owe a great deal to Essen. It\u2019s a very close-knit environment that welcomed me with open arms and supported me over many years. So, it\u2019s by no means an easy step to make the move now. Nevertheless, I\u2019m happy to be playing for BVB now and to experience something new.<\/p>\nEven though the manager, Markus Högner, is an old acquaintance? \n<\/b>Without Markus, I wouldn\u2019t be where I am today. He brought me up from the U17s and I\u2019m incredibly grateful to him for everything he\u2019s made possible for me. After a year apart, I\u2019m glad to have him back as my manager because we simply know what we can expect from each other. I want to be part of it, take the next step with BVB and help the club move forward.<\/p>\nYou were born in Schwerte, started playing football at SV Sölderholz, did your PhD at TU Dortmund and are active in the volunteer fire brigade. What does Dortmund mean to you as a city? \n<\/b>Dortmund is my home. I grew up in Lichtendorf and still live in Lichtendorf. I also thought it was absolutely the right move to build women\u2019s football from the ground up rather than buying our way into a higher division. That\u2019s what makes BVB what it is. Of course, I would have been happy if it had happened a bit sooner, but I\u2019m still glad that the women\u2019s team is now where it is and that I\u2019m part of it from now on.<\/p>\nWhat does it mean to you emotionally? \n<\/b>It\u2019s simply a childhood dream. But the Rote Erde stadium is much richer in tradition and has a completely different character. I was at the stadium for the derby against Schalke. That was very special and I even got goosebumps just sitting in the crowd.
