The lowdown on BVB returnee Jadon Sancho
From Kennington into the football world
Jadon Sancho, whose parents came from Trinidad and Tobago, spent his childhood and some of his youth in the district of Kennington in London. "Life would not have been too good for me because there were a lot of bad people," he revealed in an interview with BBC Sport. "I just wanted to get away. What might have happened if I hadn't is with me all the time." His outstanding footballing abilities took him to Watford at the age of 12 and Manchester City at 14.
From Manchester to BVB
Sancho has moved from Manchester to Dortmund twice. This time from United. Back in 2017, he left Manchester City for BVB. Then 17 years old, the winger saw better development opportunities than in City's star-studded squad, with whom Pep Guardiola did consistently let him train.
Club and league records
Sancho bagged his first Bundesliga brace in October 2018; at the age of 18 years and 216 days, the Englishman was the youngest player to score a brace in a BVB shirt. At the tender age of 20, the winger continued to pulverise further club and league records in the 2019/20 campaign. No player in Bundesliga history has reached the 30-goal mark at a younger age than Jadon Sancho (not even Erling Haaland). He became the first Borussia player since data collection started (1992) to reach 34 scorer points within a Bundesliga season (2020/2021); that same year, he was the top scorer in the DFB-Pokal with six goals.
Brilliant Bundesliga numbers
The winger has been involved in 70 goals in his 78 Bundesliga appearances to date (30 goals, 40 assists). Overall, the pacey Englishman with outstanding dribbling ability has averaged a goal – as either the scorer or provider – every 78 Bundesliga minutes.
Outstanding assister
He was the league's top provider with 19 assists in the 2018/19 season and achieved the second-best tally by a Dortmund player since data started to be collected in 1992 (Henrikh Mkhitaryan racked up 20 assists in 2015/16).
Cups and titles
He helped the England youngsters win the U17 World Cup in 2017. He made his debut for the England senior national team in the game against Croatia in October 2018 – the first player born this millennium to do so. With BVB, Jadon Sancho won the Super Cup in 2019 and the DFB-Pokal in 2021. He scored the goals to make it 1-0 and 3-0 against Leipzig in the final, before setting up Erling Haaland to round off the scoring at 4-1. In February 2023, he won the English League Cup with Manchester United.
