FAQ about the FIFA Club World Cup
The tournament format involves playing in eight groups, each with four teams. It has been determined that a maximum of two European teams and one representative from each other confederation can play in a group. The top two teams from each group advance to the Round of 16. This is followed by a direct knockout phase from the Round of 16 to the final.
The FIFA Club World Cup trophy is made of 24-karat gold-plated aluminum and features engravings in 13 different languages. Using a key, the trophy, which appears flat by default, can be expanded into a spherical sculpture made up of several rings. All 211 FIFA member associations are represented on the trophy.
Twelve teams from Europe were competing for the title of club world champion. While some of the qualification spots were reserved for the Champions League winners over the last four years, the remaining places were allocated based on the UEFA club coefficient ranking list. In March 2024, it was confirmed that one of them would go to BVB.
The club ranking list was compiled by assessing the performances of clubs in the UEFA Champions League from the 2020/21 season to the 2023/24 season. Points were awarded for wins, draws and qualification for the knockout rounds. As BVB reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 2021, played in the group stages in 2022, reached the round of 16 in 2023 and got to the final in 2024, they amassed enough points to participate in the Club World Cup.
Borussia Dortmund prepared for the tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and also spent the time between matches there. BVB trained a few miles south at the facility of Inter Miami, Lionel Messi's club. “The Florida Blue Training Center” was built in 2020 during the construction of the neighbouring Chase Stadium in order to bring all club activities together under one roof. The state-of-the-art facility offers six natural grass pitches and an artificial pitch on an area of almost 5,000 square metres.
The training centre also included a fully equipped kitchen, a cafeteria and lounge areas. In addition to classrooms, a gym and various treatment rooms, there are also state-of-the-art hydrotherapy rooms and a performance laboratory, making the facility one of the best training centres in Major League Soccer in the USA.
